This nature photo, taken during a snowshoe-hike with my husband during a snowstorm, took second place in a national photography contest in 2021. It won an Honourable Mention in the “State of the Forest” nature photo contest run by The Bateman Foundation, a non-profit nature-art initiative established by Robert Bateman, one of Canada’s preeminent wildlife artists.
I'm not sure who was more surprised as my husband and I came up a hill and through some trees into this clearing - us, or this small herd of deer!
